Silicone Dispersion (D-856)
D‑856 may be used as a primer coating on many substrates-- coating silicone or other materials, and as a splicing agent on cured silicone parts. D‑856 may also be used to prepare fabrics used in the calendaring process of silicone sheets.
D‑856 is silicone dispersion in solvent with a long pot life that air-dries within 20 - 30 minutes. Once cured product may be used in temperatures of ‑60F to 450F. D‑856 contains a heat-cured catalyst and may be thinned with Xylene or other hydrocarbon solvents used for coating surfaces.
Properties:
Shore Hardness: 80 A
Tensile Strength: 800 psi
Elongation: 100 %
Tear: 125 psi
Color: Gray
Solvent Carrier: Xylene
Solids: 30%
APPLICATION: When applying D-856 processor should avoid orange-peel texture by thinning solution with solvent. Final coat should be smooth textured.
Dip Coating: After coating, allow solvent to flash from the part before recoating. Drying time is normally 30- 60 minutes or 10 ‑ 20 minutes at 110F to 140F.
Brush Coating: To get a smooth coat during summer months, use a slow drying solvent
Example: 3 parts D‑856 to one part Xylol or Tolul. Apply 1 to 2 coats-- building a uniform covered coating. Thinning with Xylene can improve smooth surface texture.
Spray Coating: It should be thin enough so it can be sprayed with a smooth finish. Xylol and Toluol may be used for slow drying since spraying will accelerate dry time. Avoid orange peel texture due to inconsistent drying. All of the solvent should be removed to cure dispersion.
Example: 5 mil coat on a nonporous surface will air dry 10 ‑ 20 minutes. Heavy coats on porous surfaces may require from 30 minutes up to four hours-- use of heat (100f - 140f ) will reduce dry time.
Vulcanization will require heat ranging from 300F @ 5 minutes to 400F @ one minute. Post Cure of 1 hour @ 300f will result in best cure and adhesion. Cure time will be determined by heat saturation time with longer cure times required for thick coats.
FDA STATUS : D‑856 is not intended for food contact or medical uses.
COVERAGE : 40 sq. ft./ GALLON
Shipping Status: Hazardous, Flammable CL3
CAUTION: D‑856 dispersion contains hydrocarbon solvent and should be used in a well-ventilated area. Avoid prolonged or repeated breathing of vapors or skin contact. See MSDS for further information.
STORAGE: D‑856 should be stored in a cool place with lid tightly secured. When storing below 77F, it has a shelf life of 6 months from date of manufacture. It may thicken when stored for longer times and may need vigorous stirring and extra solvent to restore to its normal viscosity level.
