Synskin (ThermoPlastic)
Synskin is a unique thermoplastic polymer that when heated to 325F - 350F will cross-link and solidify to a high-stretch, flexible rubber material when cooled. Synskin is clear for ease of pigmentation. Undesired formed parts can be re-melted and re-casted. This material is great for creating flexible, highly elastic parts such as fishing lures, adult toys, and flesh-like skins.
Properties:
Specific Gravity: .988
Color: Clear
Elongation: 1000 %
Hardness (oo): 20
Viscosity: Heavy granular mass that pours
Directions:
Melt down Synskin in a temperature controlled heater (large fryer works well). Continuous stirring is recommended to keep material from burning. Material will begin melting at 285F, but faster at 325F to 350F. Once melted, pigment can be added by way of high-speed mixer. Caution should be taken to cover body or face from hot rubber solution when mixing. Check for even dispersion of pigment to create the best finished parts. Once material is melted and pigmented, material temperature can be lowered to 300F while dispensing into molds. If material gels before filling mold cavity, increase pot temperature and/or pre-heat mold. Material will be slightly tacky when cured but part can be dusted with talc or like powder for a dry velvet feel.
Processing Synskin at higher than suggested temperatures (350F) can cause fumes from USP (United States Pharacopeia) oils in its makeup and should be processed in well-ventilated area that draws fumes away from processor.
Caution:
Caution should be taken when handling hot material that can stick to skin and burn immediately. Protective clothing, gloves and eyewear should be worn to stop any accidental burns. Synskin can combust if overheated.
